Happy New Year

Happy New Year!
My name is Amanda Lee and I am Mrs. Canada International 2010. I am so pleased to be starting my first blog and sharing this journey with you.
I would like to share a little bit about myself. I have been married to my very wonderful husband Frank since July 2008. We have a beautiful eight month old son. He is the centre of our universe. We are such proud parents. Currently, I am on maternity leave from the Ottawa Hospital where I work as a Medical Radiation Technologist. When I am working I perform CT scans and MRI scans.
This year I have been asked to choose a cause to represent. I have chosen the fight against breast cancer in affiliation with Breast Cancer Action. Here in Ottawa, Breast Cancer Action is a survivor-directed, voluntary organization founded in 1992 by a group of women who knew first hand what breast cancer diagnosis meant to patients and their families. Their saying is “Because no one should face it alone “
Breast Cancer Action (BCA) offers support to those affected with breast cancer. Once diagnosed with breast cancer, many women are overwhelmed that it is difficult to absorb anything else. Breast Cancer Action provides literature on different approaches to treating and living with cancer. It allows the women to make an informed decision on the path of treatment that she chooses.
When I was in their office for the first time I was so impressed. The library, the computer and all the avenues they provide where one can research treatment information was incredible. Since not everyone has computer skills, or the means to a computer and the Internet it was so great to see a space and people who can help facilitate their search in welcoming environment. The office offers simple information as well such as phone numbers to clinics, doctor’s offices and directions.
I am a firm believer that you never fully understand what someone is going through until you have walked in their shoes. Breast Cancer Action has a program where a woman can be partnered with another survivor and provide the support that at times family and friends cannot.
Emotional well being is as important as physical well being and it radiates through this organization providing free exercise classes and having not one but two dragon boat teams!
In November I joined my partnership with Breast Cancer Action. Frank and I were invited to help with their beautiful gala and auction. It was so fun to get dressed up and dance the night away for a good cause and what a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season.
I am so looking forward to all of the fun events in store such as the pink tea that is coming this spring.
Thank you to Breast Cancer Action for generously taking me on. I will not let you down.
